Successful VBOs (Virtual Business Owners) have skills and personalities that vary tremendously.  There is no one skill or personality that reigns supreme from a success standpoint.

There are, however, five success factors or common denominators that, collectively, are a strong indicator of success.  As a leading advocate in promoting the success of VBOs, we’ve put a significant amount of effort into understanding these success factors and helping our members leverage their strong points and build up those areas that need help.

That’s absolutely fine.  You clearly have the foundational social skills to build upon.  Not only that, the social skills that are really important are ones you very likely have.  Being good at working with a team, communicating with clients, and helping fellow VBOs are skills that you either have or can be quickly taught.

This may be a yellow flag that you need a little work in this area, but you’ll be fine!

PASSION

• IT ALL STARTS HERE – Of the five VBO success factors, passion is the only one that can’t be learned. It’s got to come from you. If you lack passion, you won’t have the motivation to get to where you want to be as a VBO. So figure out what you’re passionate about and use it to build your business.
• DON’T LOSE SIGHT – It’s easy to get so caught up in work that we forget what we’re working for. That’s what happens when you lose sight of your passion. Every so often, take a moment and think about the why behind your actions to ensure that your goals and tasks align with your passion.
• KEEP THE FLAME BURNING – As a VBO, setbacks will happen. You won’t land every client. You won’t knock every job out of the park. When things don’t go as planned, it can pick away at your passion. Be prepared for setbacks. Acknowledge and address them, but don’t let them extinguish your flame.

HUSTLE

• BE PROACTIVE – It is critical for VBOs to be proactive and completely comfortable taking action without depending on anyone else.  You will need to make decisions every single day.
• DON’T FOLLOW THE SCRIPT – I’ve never met a great business person or VBO that was good at following all the rules and accepted the status quo for what it is.  The best VBOs dig deeper, try harder, and are simply unwilling to accept the scripted life most others follow.
• TAKE RISKS – This doesn’t mean “do stupid things”.  Not at all.  It means that you are never going to achieve your goals if you don’t push the envelope.  There are actually many ways to “de-risk” what most people view as risks.
• BE OPPORTUNISTIC – Our minds are like parachutes – they work best when open.  Very few things go exactly as we anticipate they will.  Sometimes you have to make lemonade out of lemons.  The best VBOs are always looking for the “angle” that will help them take advantage of a situation.
• GROW YOUR NETWORK – In many cases, you’ll find your NETWORK equals your NET WORTH.  For VBOs this doesn’t mean you are the extrovert walking around shaking hands and kissing babies.  This simply means you use every opportunity to grow your stable of business contacts.

DILIGENCE

• LEARN TO SAY NO – Often, you’ll find you are more successful having a great “to-don’t” list than a “to-do” list.  For a VBO, learning to say NO is one of the most powerful and transformational lessons.
• SYSTEMS RULE – At VBO Nation, we have an extremely powerful tool we call the 13 WEEK MIRACLE.  It is a system that takes the guesswork out of performance.  Regardless of whether you use that or another method, you will exponentially increase your chances for success if you follow a system.
• STICK TO YOUR PROMISES – Delivering for clients and customers is YOUR BRAND.  Even if it is just you, create a culture of accountability.  Deliver what you promise.  Even build a buffer in so you can deliver early.  Go above and beyond the call of duty.  Over deliver.  If you do that effectively, you will never come up short of new business.

CONFIDENCE

• TRUST IN YOURSELF – As a VBO you don’t have the luxury of second-guessing yourself.  True confidence doesn’t mean being bull-headed.  It means knowing your line of business better than anyone else and diligently applying it to everything you do.
• IGNORE THE NAYSAYERS – This one can be tough, but you’ll need to get good at it.  From the very second you announce you are going to become a VBO, people (including your loved ones) are going to start telling you why it cannot be done.  In some cases, they really think they are helping.  In others, they may be jealous and want to sabotage your efforts.  In the end, you are going to spell your own success.  Believe in YOU!
• CREATE YOUR DREAM – As Henry Ford once said, “If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right”.  The absolute biggest element of your success lives between your ears.  Surround yourself with doers, with positive people.  A dream written down with a date becomes a goal.  A goal broken down into steps becomes a plan.  A plan backed by actions makes your dream come true.
• LEARNING IS A PROCESS, NOT A DESTINATION – With knowledge comes confidence. The most successful people are forever learning.  They have an insatiable curiosity and appetite for knowledge.  Regardless of what you do, commit to being the best!

SOCIAL

• DO I NEED TO BE SOCIAL? – To start off with, you can be an absolute introvert and still be a very successful VBO.  Many quizzes for entrepreneurs are heavily weighted on our ability to be a social butterfly – not this one.  With that said, you are going to be much more successful with a VBO Network.  These are people who support your efforts and fill the gaps between your skills.  In many cases, you will fill their skill gaps.  In every case, you will learn to lean on them in a big way.  Cherish and foster these relationships!
• YOUR SOCIAL BANK ACCOUNT – Most of us are happy helping others.  When you help others it is like making a deposit in your social bank account.  If you’ve been good about making deposits it’s easy asking for favors from time to time (withdrawals).
