Going Corporate: Five Steps to Getting into Corporate America as a VBO

If you’ve always wanted to work with the biggest brands in corporate America but didn’t want to give up your work from home freelance lifestyle, this is your chance. We’re going to give you five sure-fire steps that’ll help you create opportunities for yourself as a VBO in corporate america.   1. Use LinkedIn to build your Dream 100 list of corporations. 

Are there any brands that you’ve been dying to work with? Sure there are! And there’s no better time than the present to start making your dreams a reality. That’s part of the VBO code. We don’t wait for opportunity to come knocking. We knock until that door opens. So, head over to LinkedIn and start building your corporation dream team. Search the site and compile a list of 100 corporations that you’d love to lend your skills and expertise to as a VBO. Think big and think small. Go for smaller, lesser known corporations that are a good fit, and go for the heavy hitters too, why not?

Be sure to keep what you want in a brand partnership in mind. By working with a corporation, you’re aligning your brand with theirs, so do your research. How do they treat their employees? Are they environmentally or socially conscious? Do they have political affiliations? Any large scandals in the last few years? What does their marketing say about them? What do their customers say about them? Take everything into account as you build your list, so that you’re aligning your business with corporations that will boost your brand in a positive way. 

  1. Go online to find email addresses for contacts in your Dream 100.

You may be able to find email addresses for contacts who work at a corporation on your list readily available on LinkedIn. But in the event that you can’t, there are ways around this issue. If you have a name for a contact, which you should be able to find on LinkedIn, and the domain name for the corporation they work for, you can go to www.hunter.io to find email addresses. You can submit up to 50 requests a month with their free plan, or you can pay a little more to receive CSV exports and send cold email campaigns.  SellHack is another affordable option that works similarly. 

  1. Customize our provided email template to reach out to your Dream 100.

If you’re a little nervous about reaching out to your Dream 100, don’t be. You’ll be glad to know that we’ve done some of the work for you. Download our free email template, and use it as a starting point for the emails you’ll send out. You can customize it as much as you want, but it has all of the major things you need already included. 

  1. Send out five emails a day tailored to each individual contact.

This might seem like a no-brainer, but in case it’s not, let me spell it out for you. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, send out the exact same email to your Dream 100. And don’t send it out all at once, i.e. putting every corporation in the to or cc line and pressing send. That is exactly how not to do it. Instead, send out five emails every day, each one to a different corporation. And tailor each email to the specific corporation you’re addressing. Spend some time on each corporation’s website to get specific information that you could reference in your email. Things about their company culture, latest marketing campaign or news feature work well. It’s an even better idea to relate some of your content to your own VBO Niche. For example, if you’re a graphic designer, you could speak to the design on their billboards and digital ads and suggest how you could be an asset. Just be cordial; don’t be disparaging about it. No one likes a pompous asshat. 

  1. Have a two-part follow up mechanism.

After you’ve sent out your initial email, it’s proactive of you to have a two-part follow-up plan. If you don’t get a response within seven days, send out a follow up email reminding the contact of your interest in working with the corporation. Briefly restate your skills and the benefits of working with a VBO. Direct them to your online portfolio again if you have one, and let them know how they can contact you. Give it another five to seven days after that, and if you still don’t get a response, send out a final email. Keep the last email brief. Thank the contact for their consideration, and reaffirm that they have your contact information should they decide to reach out to you in the future.
